Epicurean was established in 2004 out of a company making eco-friendly skate parks. The wood composite that was used in the ramps is extremely durable, non-porous, food and dishwasher safe. The company started producing chopping boards from the excess material to gift to family and friends. As demand soared, Epicurean began producing a variety of products using this wood composite, before updating to a lighter but just as durable composite of resin and paper.
The Epicurean chopping boards and kitchen utensils are made out of materials that are both durable and eco-friendly. Made of Richlite, a lightweight, durable resin and paper composite. The company uses production processes that minimise and recycle waste.
Epicurean resin and paper composite boards and utensils are non-porous and dishwasher-safe. They do not harbour bacteria or absorb flavours and odours and are therefore very hygienic. In addition, cutting on an Epicurean board keeps the knife's edge sharp for longer as it is easy on the knife. The boards are also heat resistant to 175°C, making it possible to use as a trivet. Convenient corner hole for hanging.
Easy to maintain and will last for years.
Epicurean cutting boards and utensils are exclusively manufactured in the United States of America.
Frequently asked Questions
What are the boards made of?
Made from many layers of high quality decorative paper, Richlite’s surface texture comes from the natural variation in the way fibres lay within the paper. These rolls of paper are saturated with a thermosetting resin before they are cut to length and laid up by hand. Each sheet is carefully stacked, alternating the direction of paper for the ultimate balance and stability. The stacks are pressed under even heat and pressure, which bonds the layers of paper together and cures the resin. The panels are then slowly cooled to produce a solid, stable sheet material.
Richlite’s colour comes from a combination of the colour of the paper and the deep amber tone of the resin. No dyes are added to the material, and all of the paper is either post consumer waste recycled or sustainably harvested
Are the boards food safe?
Yes, the cutting surfaces are BPA free.
Are the boards dishwasher safe?
Yes.
How do I prevent the board from warping and how can I correct this?
The cutting surfaces should be stored on edge rather than flat when not in use. If stored flat, moisture (usually residual water left from washing by hand or in the dishwasher) becomes trapped underneath and as the moisture tries to escape it gets trapped underneath causing the board to warp. To ‘counter warp’ the board, wash your board, leave a bit of moisture on the board and lay it on the opposite side for a day or so to level out the warp.
Will my Epicurean cutting surface stain?
The cutting surfaces are stain-resistant. However, certain foods that are oily, acidic and highly pigmented can stain the board. To remove stubborn stains, try using a non-abrasive household cleaner.
What is the best way to maintain the board? Wash with hot soapy water or put in the dishwasher. We stock Epicurean Board Butter - a proprietary blend of mineral oil and beeswax to condition and maintain the boards.
