Product Details

John Julian has mastered the art of English ceramics, from DNA to design. The clay, predominantly dug in Cornwall, is made in Stoke-on-Trent and then hand-thrown or moulded on a jolley in rural Wiltshire. At John Julian, ceramics are made in small batches and fired once at a high temperature as opposed to the more common practice of firing twice. In addition to conserving energy, this makes every piece less susceptible to cracks and chips, ready to last a lifetime and longer. This 31cm charger plate, which is great for a table setting or using as a large plate, has been made by hand on a jolley, which allows for uniformity in shape—but not at the expense of the human touch, visible in the ‘imperfections’ that make every one piece differ very slightly in hue and size. The Line Noir range, inspired by Parisian bistros, features a thin black line on the border that’s been painted by hand. It is microwave and dishwasher-safe.

Why we love it

‘You’ll never tire of classic tableware like this—it’s beautiful but never distracts from the food on the plate, and just as suitable for daily use as it is for your next dinner party. What sets John Julian apart is the distinctly warm, muted tones and thickness. The “made by a human” quality is what made me switch over from the tableware I’d had for 15 years (and never thought much about until now!).’
