Product Details

John Julian has mastered the art of English ceramics, from DNA to design. The clay, predominantly dug in Cornwall, is made in Stoke-on-Trent and then hand-thrown in a Wiltshire studio by skilled artisans. At John Julian, ceramics are made in small batches and fired once at a high temperature as opposed to the more common practice of firing twice. In addition to conserving energy, this makes every piece less susceptible to cracks and chips, ready to last a lifetime and longer. This porcelain mug has been made by hand on a jolley, which allows for uniformity in shape—but not at the expense of the human touch, visible in the ‘imperfections’ that make every one piece differ very slightly in hue and size. It is fully glazed, and thus suitable for the dishwasher and microwave.

Why we love it

‘You’ll never tire of classic white porcelain like this—it’s beautiful but never distracts from the food, and just as suitable for daily use as it is for your next dinner party. What sets John Julian apart is the distinctly warm, muted tone and thickness. The “made by a human” quality is what made me switch over from the tableware I’d had for 15 years (and never thought much about until now!).’

About The Brand

John Julian

Trained as a sculptor, John Julian began his ceramics journey after living with a chef and seeing how often she used a mortar and pestle. From that iconic design first design onwards, his Wiltshire studio focuses on English-made porcelain and stoneware with a pared-back utilitarian style and warm white hues. As a member of the British Ceramic Confederation and the Energy and Emissions Group, John Julian is working towards helping the UK reach net zero emissions by 2050.
