Gastrolux Biotan Plus vs. Evo Non-Stick Pans What’s the Difference?

We believe every cook needs at least one non-stick pan in their arsenal. Whether you use it just to cook notoriously sticky ingredients (like eggs), or simply want to cook with the assurance that clean-up will be a breeze, it’s a worthwhile investment.

But there is a catch: Non-sticks pans are not made to last a lifetime, and if used without proper care and maintenance, they will lose their effectiveness quickly. This can be prevented by A) investing in a good-quality non-stick pan that is built to last as long as possible, and B) following a few simple care tips that expand their lifespan.

For a good-quality non-stick pan, look no further than Gastrolux, whose Biotan Plus range of pans have been a Borough Kitchen team and customer favourite for over a decade. They just released a new range of non-stick pans called Evo, which – unlike the Biotan Plus range – has a non-stick coating made of silicone and bio-minerals that naturally biodegrade over time, making it a more environmentally friendly option.

There are pros and cons to each range, which we break down below. But first, let us note what they share in common (and why we love them).

Gastrolux: Our Favourite Non-Stick Pans

Based in Denmark, where all their pans are manufactured, Gastrolux employs just over a dozen craftsmen to make exceptional non-stick cookware. Their pans, made of recycled aluminium, are squeeze-cast into moulds for exceptional durability, then coated with a 100% food-safe non-stick coating that is regularly tested for safety by the Danish Technology Institute.

Here are a few key features that Gastrolux Biotan Plus and Gastrolux Evo pans have in common:

  • Durable Aluminium Base: Both the Biotan Plus and Evo pans are made from squeeze-cast recycled aluminium, which is thicker and more compact than the standard aluminium used in non-stick cookware. The thickness reduces heat fluctuations, distributing heat in a consistent, even way that provides extra durability for the non-stick coating.

  • Induction-Compatible: Gastrolux non-stick pans work on all hobs, including induction and the AGA. They are oven-compatible as long as the handles are removed. They do not work on barbecues or open fire.

  • Effective Non-Stick Coating: Whether you're flipping eggs or searing fish, both coatings offer superb non-stick performance with minimal oil. They are easy to clean by hand, and should never be placed in the dishwasher or scoured with metal. (Read our tips for cooking and cleaning non-stick pans.)

  • Removable Handles: All Gastrolux pans come with comfortable, ergonomic handles that click on and off; no screws or welding. This gives the pan additional functionality, such as:

    • Oven Compatibility: All Gastrolux pans, without handles, are oven-safe up to 260°C. The handles are easy to click on and off, so you don’t even need to use a glove when placing and removing a Gastrolux pan from the oven.

    • Efficient Storage: Since the handles are so easy to remove, it allows these pans to be stored efficiently in drawers and cupboards.

    • Fits Inside Sinks: When you need to clean a Gastrolux pan, you can remove the handle and let the base of the pan soak in the sink, where it will sit flat.

  • Exclusive Warranty: Borough Kitchen offers exclusive warranties for both Gastrolux ranges – 10 years for Biotan Plus, and 5 years for Evo. These warranties only cover manufacturing defects, not misuse.

Gastrolux Biotan Plus: Pros & Cons

A tried-and-true favourite, Biotan Plus is the original Gastrolux pan with a non-stick coating that has earned a strong reputation for its performance and resilience. We carry a few different pans in the Biotan Plus range, including saute pans and woks.

Pros:

  • Longer-Lasting Non-Stick Coating: The non-stick properties are superior between 24 and 48 months, but can last longer with proper use and care.

  • Well-Proven Formula: Since our team and customers have used Gastrolux Biotan Pans over a long period of time (10+ years), we are confident in its ability to hold up over time.

Cons:

  • More Prone to Scratching: The surface of a Biotan Plus pan is more likely to scratch if you use metal utensils. Be sure to use wooden or silicone utensils when using non-stick cookware.

  • Contains PFAS: While Biotan Plus pans are completely non-toxic and made from recycled aluminium, they contain plastics that do not bio-degrade naturally.

Gastrolux Evo: Pros & Cons

The Evo range is the latest innovation from Gastrolux, launched in early 2025. It does not contain any PFAS. Right now, we only carry a non-stick frying pan in this range.

Pros:

  • Environmentally Friendly: This pan contains no PFAS, also known as ‘forever chemicals’. Instead, the coating is made of bio-minerals like silicone which naturally degrade over time.

  • Resists Scratches: Subtle updates to design and finish give the Evo range a clean, contemporary look that fits beautifully into modern kitchens.

  • More Resistant to High Heat: The Evo coating is slightly more resistant to high heat than the Biotan Plus. However, with both pans, we do not recommend cooking over medium heat, especially on induction hobs.

Cons:

  • Shorter Longevity: The non-stick properties are superior between 12 and 24 months, but can last longer with proper use and care.

  • Newer on the Market: While it builds on Gastrolux’s decades of expertise, the Evo is still newer, and we have less experience with it than the Biotan Plus.

Which Gastrolux Pan Is Best For You?

  • Choose Gastrolux Biotan Plus if you’re after a non-stick pan that will perform for up to 48 months or longer (with proper use and care).

  • Choose Gastrolux Evo if you’re looking for a PFAS-free pan that will naturally biodegrade with time, noting that its peak performance window will be shorter (up to 24 months or longer with proper use and care).
