Handcrafted in the Drôme region of France since 1857, Jars Ceramistes produces ultra-durable, eco-friendly stoneware that offers the incredible durability of porcelain paired with the breathtaking, artisan beauty of handmade ceramics.
Jars creates their own unique slip using natural clay sourced exclusively from within Europe, which is why their quality is impossible to replicate. Furthermore, Jars fires their stoneware just once at a remarkably high temperature (1285°C). Typically, the intense heat required to achieve porcelain-level toughness strips away rich colours. However, thanks to their homemade slip and a carefully guarded secret glaze recipe, Jars achieves brilliant, luminous hues that never fade.
Trusted by over 200 Michelin-starred restaurants worldwide, Jars tableware is non-porous and highly chip-resistant. Because it is tough enough for the most demanding professional kitchens, it is built to last a lifetime in your home. The vibrant tones within each collection are specifically designed to look beautiful when mixed and matched, allowing you to easily build and add to your tableware collection over time.
Below is a breakdown of the primary Jars Céramistes ranges available at Borough Kitchen, spanning classic dinnerware sets to everyday essentials like roasting dishes, egg cups, mugs, and tumblers. We have a few pieces and colours that are exclusive to our shop.
Jars Ceramistes FAQ
Here is a list of the questions we are frequently asked about our range of Jars ceramics, full of details that will help you assess whether Jars tableware is right for you, as well as what pieces to select for your home.
What Jars Ranges Do You Carry?
1. Maguelone
The Jars Maguelone range is defined by its organic, slightly irregular round shapes and Jars' signature crackled glaze.
Aesthetic: Earthy and contemporary with a 'windswept' look and subtly uneven edges.
Best For: Rustic, organic table settings.
Care Notes: While oven-safe for warming, do not use Maguelone for cooking. At temperatures over 200°C (especially with oil), the crackle glaze can 'open' and permanently absorb food colours.

2. Epure
The Epure collection is a modern tribute to the elegant tableware found in large, traditional family homes, with the thinness reminiscent of classic white porcelain.
Aesthetic: Refined, minimalist, and deeply elegant with clean lines and classic proportions. These pieces have an unglazed white border for colour and texture contrast.
Best For: Formal dining, minimalist aesthetics, and elevated everyday dining (featuring excellent deep serving and ramen bowls).
Care Notes: While oven-safe for warming, do not use for cooking. At temperatures over 200°C (especially with oil), the crackle glaze can 'open' and permanently absorb food colours.

3. Cantine
The Cantine collection brings a lively, playful energy to the dining table, with simple shapes and a smooth-coloured finish.
Aesthetic: Simple, stackable shapes finished with a high-gloss glaze.
Best For: Everyday use. Because the shapes stack so neatly, Cantine is highly practical for compact kitchen storage.

4. Tourron
The Tourron range blends Jars' 160-year heritage with bold, radiant colours and perfectly circular, sculptural silhouettes. It was the first of their ranges designed by artist Pierre Casenove.
Aesthetic: Pure, expressive, and classic. The layered, reactive enamels create a luminous finish.
Best For: Adding intense, solid pops of colour to a table setting. Tourron serves as a highly versatile foundation for creative plating.
Care Notes: While oven-safe for warming, do not use for cooking. At temperatures over 200°C (especially with oil), the crackle glaze can 'open' and permanently absorb food colours.

5. Wabi
The Wabi collection consists of specialist serving pieces that function as true works of art for the dining table.
Aesthetic: Deeply sculptural and perfectly imperfect, with raw, textured edges inspired by nature.
Best For: Striking centrepieces and dramatic serving platters. Wabi pieces act as natural focal points that elevate an entire table setting.
Care Notes: While oven-safe for warming, do not use for cooking. At temperatures over 200°C (especially with oil), the crackle glaze can 'open' and permanently absorb food colours.

What Jars pieces are exclusive to Borough Kitchen?
We carry exclusive pieces, colours, and sets tailored specifically for Borough Kitchen customers, including Jars Epure in the colours Brume and Givre, Jars Oil Bottles, select Jars Tourron Serving Bowls in Vert Olive and Ombre Gris, and Jars 16-piece dinner sets.
Is Jars Ceramistes dinnerware dishwasher and microwave safe?
Yes. Jars stoneware is completely safe for both microwaves and dishwashers. The high-heat firing process ensures the ceramics resist cracking, fading, and the general stress of daily use – which is why they are trusted by hundreds of Michelin-starred restaurants.
How does Jars achieve such vibrant colours on durable ceramics?
Usually, the extreme heat required to make ceramics as durable as porcelain removes all colours. However, Jars uses a secret recipe for their glazes alongside their European-sourced homemade slip. This rare technique results in a 'best of both worlds' quality – porcelain-level durability paired with the vibrant finish of artisan tableware.
Are Jars Ceramistes products eco-friendly?
Yes. Jars implements highly sustainable manufacturing practices. They make their own slip using natural clay sourced within Europe, and fire their stoneware only once at high heat, significantly reducing energy consumption. They also recycle exhaust heat, water, and clay mixes, ensuring zero pollutants extend to the surrounding environment.
Can Jars ceramics go in the oven?
Jars tableware can be safely pre-heated in a low oven (maximum 150°C) from room temperature to warm your plates. However, you must avoid thermal shock – never place a cold dish directly from the fridge into a hot oven. Additionally, avoid high-heat cooking with crackled glazes (like the Maguelone range), as oil can permanently stain the ceramic. (Note: this does not apply to Jars Cantine roasting dishes, which are specifically designed to withstand standard oven cooking temperatures).
Can I request a colour which you don’t currently have in stock?
Jars change their glazes seasonally, so our range is constantly changing and evolving. We can request glazes from Jars for special orders; please contact online@boroughkitchen.com to discuss this.
