The thermometer is clearly marked for poultry, beef, lamb and pork. It does not require any batteries or set-up. Insert the probe into the thickest part of the meat, avoiding any bones, before placing it in the oven to cook. Alternatively, you can insert the probe after the meat cooks to check doneness.
