Every month in each of our stores, we present a free, 20-minute tutorial on the care and maintenance of your knives. You'll receive hands-on instruction using the whetstone, our favourite knife sharpening tool. We'll explain why we love it and why you need one. Each whetstone we sell features a coarse grit side to sharpen and repair nicks, and a fine grit side to finish and refine the knife's edge. You'll learn to achieve a level of sharpness far superior to what you can obtain with a pull-through sharpener. Besides, pull-through sharpeners can eat away much more of the blade each time you use it.
A whetstone provides a greater level of control when you are sharpening your knives versus other methods and the sharp edge will hold much longer. What’s more, whetstones also come in handy when that pair of garden secateurs or pocket knife starts to become a little dull.
Using a whetstone might sound a little intimidating, something only chefs need to know how to do. But after spending money on a high-quality knife, we think it makes sense to learn how to properly care for it. And, in the end, it will be much more cost-effective than sending your knives out to be sharpened or simply replacing them.
